The 50th Anniversary Clio Awards were designed to be something special for a troubled industry and they were, especially for a collection of western American advertising agencies that walked off with more than their share of Clio awards.

  • Crispin Porter + Bogusky of Boulder, Colorado was named agency of the year.
  • Dan Wieden of Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Oregon, was honored with the industry’s lifetime achievement award.
  • Goodby, Silverstein and Partners of San Francisco, won a Hall of Fame award and two Clio Golds.
  • The Hispanic Grupo Gallegos agency of Long Beach, California won a Gold in the radio category.
  • The Ketchum Agency of San Francisco won one of the two Clio Golds given in the new public relations category. The other PR Gold went to Eddleman of Chicago.

"Crazy Irishman Named David Kennedy"

The 64-year-old Wieden, best known for his "Just Do It" Nike slogan, accepted the highest individual award surrounded by his partners at Wieden + Kennedy. He said "a lot of what happens to you in life depends on whose canoe you jump in and I jumped into the canoe of a crazy Irishman named David Kennedy." Their Portland and Amsterdam offices won three 2009 Golds for their Nike and Coca Cola commercials.

Crispin Porter + Bogusky won a Grand Clio in the Interactive category for its "fresh approach" with its Burger King "Whopper Sacrifice" campaign. Its Burger King campaign also won a Clio Gold award for its online application and another in the restaurant and fast food category. The agency won a third Gold for its Volkswagen integrated campaign featuring Brooke Shields.

Saatchi & Saatchi agencies in New York, London and Malaysia won six Clio Golds, including three for television commercials, one for radio, one for print and one for innovation.

Aaron Burr Commercial for California Milk Processors

Goodby, Silverstein and Partners received a Hall of Fame award for its "Aaron Burr" commercial for the California Milk Processors Board. It also won Clio Golds for its interactive campaigns for Sprint and Nintendo. TBWA agencies won three Golds. TBWA Chiat/Day in New York won with a commercial for Skittles and TBWA Paris won two golds for print ads.

Other Clio Grand awards were won by:

  • Art + COM of Berlin in design
  • CLM/BBDO of Boulogne-Billancourt in print
  • Droga5 of New York for its "Million" campaign in the Content and Contact category
  • Scholz & Friends of Hamburg for its poem reading video on behalf of Doppelherz Health Care Products

Despite the success of the western American agencies, New York led all American cities with 10 awards. San Francisco and Boulder were next with four each, followed by Chicago with three.

Clio International Scope

Agencies from 22 cities outside the United States won Grand or Gold awards as Clio displayed its international scope. London led that group with seven awards, followed by Paris and Hamburg with three each.

A total of 66 Hall of Fame, Clio Grand and Clio Gold awards were given during the May awards program in Las Vegas. Numerous Silver and Bronze awards were also presented, but the emphasis was on the Grands and the Golds.
