Clio 2009 Biggest Ad Award WinnersCrispin Porter + Bogusky of Boulder Named Advertising Agency of Year
Dan Wieden of W+K given Lifetime Achievement Award. Goodby Silverstein wins a Hall of Fame award and two Clio Golds. Saatchi and Saatchi agencies take six Golds.
The 50th Anniversary Clio Awards were designed to be something special for a troubled industry and they were, especially for a collection of western American advertising agencies that walked off with more than their share of Clio awards.
"Crazy Irishman Named David Kennedy"The 64-year-old Wieden, best known for his "Just Do It" Nike slogan, accepted the highest individual award surrounded by his partners at Wieden + Kennedy. He said "a lot of what happens to you in life depends on whose canoe you jump in and I jumped into the canoe of a crazy Irishman named David Kennedy." Their Portland and Amsterdam offices won three 2009 Golds for their Nike and Coca Cola commercials. Crispin Porter + Bogusky won a Grand Clio in the Interactive category for its "fresh approach" with its Burger King "Whopper Sacrifice" campaign. Its Burger King campaign also won a Clio Gold award for its online application and another in the restaurant and fast food category. The agency won a third Gold for its Volkswagen integrated campaign featuring Brooke Shields. Saatchi & Saatchi agencies in New York, London and Malaysia won six Clio Golds, including three for television commercials, one for radio, one for print and one for innovation. Aaron Burr Commercial for California Milk ProcessorsGoodby, Silverstein and Partners received a Hall of Fame award for its "Aaron Burr" commercial for the California Milk Processors Board. It also won Clio Golds for its interactive campaigns for Sprint and Nintendo. TBWA agencies won three Golds. TBWA Chiat/Day in New York won with a commercial for Skittles and TBWA Paris won two golds for print ads. Other Clio Grand awards were won by:
Despite the success of the western American agencies, New York led all American cities with 10 awards. San Francisco and Boulder were next with four each, followed by Chicago with three. Clio International ScopeAgencies from 22 cities outside the United States won Grand or Gold awards as Clio displayed its international scope. London led that group with seven awards, followed by Paris and Hamburg with three each. A total of 66 Hall of Fame, Clio Grand and Clio Gold awards were given during the May awards program in Las Vegas.
